4 Ways To Prepare Your Landscape for the Winter

Most landscapes will benefit from a little extra care in the fall. Regardless of the normal winter temperatures in your area, there are things that need to be done. These four tasks can help you get things wrapped up and ready to face the winter.

1. Trim Trees and Shrubs

Fall is a great time to address the growth that took place during the active spring and summer. In addition to giving landscape plants a good starting place in the spring, it also minimizes the chances of broken limbs in harsh winter weather. Some trees are more finicky than others when it comes to pruning technique, so consult with an arborist if you are unsure about how to approach one. They can also be a useful resource if you notice damage from insects or disease.

2. Apply Fall Fertilizers

Lawns can benefit from an application of fall fertilizer in many climates. It helps the roots develop strong, healthy systems so they are better prepared to produce a lush green lawn when spring rolls around. If the soil is compacted, aerating it beforehand will help the nutrients and water get down to the roots.

3. Winterize Water Features

Water features are growing in popularity, but they can suffer during winters in colder climates. Find out what steps you need to take to ensure yours survives the winter unscathed. Now is also a good time to address any aquatic weed control issues you’ve had in warmer weather and take a preemptive strike to avoid them next season.

4. Protect Sensitive Plants

Some plants can survive sub-freezing temperatures without any issues at all. Others don’t fare as well. If you have any plants that might be sensitive to cold, take steps to protect them. That might mean bringing them indoors or covering them when temperatures are forecast to dip.

By keeping the lawn fed, trimming trees to avoid breakage and encourage spring growth and working to protect other landscape features from the cold, your yard will be ready to face the winter.
