You have to ask for the ball. If you do not ask, you are not going to get what you want. This piece of advice is true for just about any position on the field (except for the goalkeeper). Without the ball, you cannot make things happen. If you find yourself shying away, you may want to reevaluate why you are in the game in the first place.
If you are facing a defender, try getting past them instead of simply holding the ball. You can hold the ball for a while by shielding it with your body and passing it from one foot to the other but you will eventually have to attack and get past the defender.
Whenever possible, try to cross the ball. It can lead to some unexpected, positive consequences. For example, doing so could set up your teammate for the score or the ball could ricochet off another player and find its way into the goal. Just when the other team thinks they have you figured out, though, try dribbling in for the score.
Learn that you must use all of your foot surface area in soccer. Usually you will be using your instep and front of your foot as you dribble. A strong player uses both the outside and inside of not only one foot, but both of them. This cuts the ball away from pressure so that you can control it no matter where defensive pressure is coming from.
When making a shot remember that wider is better than higher. Wide shots cause the goalie to really stretch. If you can manage to shoot a wide shot that is close to the ground, you will most likely score because the goalie will need to stretch and will not have good control over his body.
Make sure you are juggling the ball frequently so that you can improve your ball-handling skills. Juggling a soccer ball requires a lot of precision, and the only way to improve at this is practicing regularly. In addition, you should try improving other skills while juggling, such as passing, shooting, and trapping. For instance, juggle the ball some and then shoot the ball without allowing the ball to touch the ground.
Learn how to sprint. Sprinting is used when you are standing still and then begin running as fast as you can. To practice this technique, stand still for 15 seconds, then begin running as fast as you can for 15 seconds. Repeat the process for 30 minutes to help increase your sprinting takeoffs.
